Drynaria sp. New Guinea (Mini) is a rare, dwarf epiphytic basket fern from Papua New Guinea, noted as the smallest in its genus. It features 3"-4" deep green spore-bearing fronds and round shield-like base fronds. It thrives best in highly humid, well-ventilated vivariums or mounted in baskets.
To successfully cultivate this miniature plant, it's best to replicate its natural canopy-dwelling environment:
- Light: Provide bright, indirect to shaded light. Avoid harsh, direct sun to prevent scorching the delicate foliage.
- Watering: Keep the growing medium consistently damp but never waterlogged. Allow it to dry out slightly between waterings to encourage healthy root growth and prevent rot.
- Soil & Mounting: Use an exceptionally coarse, porous medium like sphagnum moss and bark. Because it's an epiphyte, it excels when mounted on cork bark or grown in slotted orchid baskets.
- Humidity: Thrives in 60%+ humidity, making it an ideal choice for greenhouses or terrariums. Ensure there is adequate air circulation to avoid mold or mildew.
- Fertilizer: Apply a diluted, balanced liquid fertilizer sparingly during the active growing season (spring and summer).
